Returning home

What to sort before you leave the US, changing your return flight, references, and why you must not overstay your grace period.

What to arrange before you leave the US

Before you head home, make sure you have:

  • Confirmed your return flight details
  • Collected any final pay from your resort
  • Saved your W-2 information, or know how to access it later, as you'll need it for taxes
  • Insurance coverage that runs through your departure date (see Length of insurance coverage)
  • Said goodbye to the friends you've made, and swapped contact details

Changing your return flight

If Resort Leaders booked your flights, you can request a change through the travel and flights section of your profile. See Return flights for how it works. If you booked your own flights, contact your airline or travel provider directly.

Can I use my resort as a reference?

Many participants use their manager or supervisor as a professional reference afterwards. Resort experience looks great on a CV, and employers value the teamwork, reliability, and customer service it shows. Before you leave, ask whether they'd be happy to be a reference and make sure you have their contact details.

What happens if I overstay my grace period?

You have up to 30 days to travel after your contract ends, and you must leave the US within that window. Overstaying is serious and can lead to penalties, a ban from future US visas, and other legal consequences. If you're at risk of overstaying for reasons outside your control, such as a cancelled flight or a medical emergency, contact Resort Leaders and your visa sponsor immediately.
