Length of insurance coverage

How long your insurance lasts and how to extend it if you stay longer.

Last updated June 17, 2026

Your program fee includes up to 120 days of insurance on the Standard Plan. If your program runs longer than 120 days, or you want to stay and travel afterward, you need to extend your insurance to cover the extra days.

You can see the length of your coverage in your application. Any days beyond what is included show as pending until you pay for them. Make sure those days are paid before you travel, as staying in the US without active insurance can leave you with very large medical bills.

Extension rates

  • Standard Plan: included for the first 120 days, then $2.50 per day
  • Upgrade Plan: $2 per day

You extend and pay through the EGI Student Zone. See Extending your insurance for the steps.

Programs longer than 12 months

If your program is 12 months or under, your policy covers your full program. If it runs longer than 12 months, your initial policy covers the first 12 months and we will be in touch to arrange a second policy for the rest of your time in the US. You do not need to do anything now.

If you go home early

If you decide to go home earlier than planned, let us know and we will cancel your insurance once you arrive home. There are no refunds for unused extensions or upgrades.

Note: It is your responsibility to keep your insurance dates matching your travel dates.
