Adding your references

How to request your references, who can act as a referee, and how recommendation letters work.

Last updated June 16, 2026

Why you need references

Resort Leaders asks for three professional references as part of your application. The US Department of State requires them, and the employer who hires you relies on them too.

Your referees should be people who've known you for at least 6 months, such as:

  • An employer or supervisor
  • A teacher
  • A lecturer

References from friends or relatives aren't accepted.

How to request a reference

You send reference requests from the References section of your application.

  1. Select Request Reference
  2. Enter your referee's full name and email address
  3. Send the request

Resort Leaders then emails a reference form to your referee. Remind them to check their inbox, including junk and spam folders.

Each request lasts 7 days. If your referee doesn't complete the form in time, the request expires and you'll need to resend it or ask someone else. Check back on the References section to confirm each reference has been submitted.

Recommendation letters

If you have previous work experience, collect a letter of recommendation from each previous employer. Each letter needs to:

  • Match the details on your resume, including employer name, dates of employment, and job title
  • Be on headed paper
  • Be signed, and stamped where possible

Merge your letters into one PDF and upload the file. If you're a student without work experience, you can request a letter from one of your professors instead.

You need at least one reference within 15 days of being Accepted.

Returning to a resort

If you're returning to a resort, you need one new professional reference. It can't be from your previous US employer, or from friends or relatives.
