After you've completed your DS-160, you'll attend an interview at a US embassy or consulate to apply for your J-1 visa. Here's how to book it and what to expect.
How to book your appointment
The booking process varies by country. Step-by-step instructions for your country are in the visa section of your Resort Leaders profile. Follow those carefully, as the process, required documents, and fees differ depending on where you're applying from.
Book as early as you can once your DS-2019 and SEVIS details are ready. Appointments fill up quickly in peak season.
If no appointment dates are available
Keep checking. Slots are updated frequently and new dates open up often. If there's more than one embassy or consulate in your country, check all of them. If you're still struggling to find a date, contact your local Resort Leaders office, as they may be able to help.
What to bring
Exact requirements vary by country, but have these ready:
- Your passport, valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned stay
- Your DS-2019 form
- Your SEVIS receipt
- Your DS-160 confirmation page
- A US passport-sized photo (2 x 2 inches)
- Proof of your resort placement, including the resort's address and contact details
- Any other documents listed in your country-specific visa guide
Keep everything organized and easy to reach. Your Resort Leaders profile has a full checklist for your country.
What they'll ask
Consular officers usually ask straightforward questions about your trip. Be ready to talk about:
- The resort you'll be working at and where it is
- Your role and program
- How long you'll be in the US
- Your plans for after your program, and for returning home
Answer clearly and honestly. There's no need to volunteer extra information unless you're asked.
Tips for your interview
- Arrive early with all your documents ready
- Be polite, confident, and clear in your answers
- Know your resort, your role, and your visa sponsor
- Dress smartly
- Try not to be nervous. The vast majority of participants are approved without any issues
If your visa is refused or delayed
If your visa is refused, contact Resort Leaders straight away. Don't panic, and don't reapply or take any action before speaking to the team first. Every refusal is different, and the next steps depend on the reason the officer gives.
If your visa is delayed, for example because extra processing is needed, stay in close contact with Resort Leaders so the team can help manage your start date and travel.
